A Smarter Way to Protect Your Christiania Bike

One of the best things about a Christiania Bike is how quickly it becomes part of everyday life. Kids to school, groceries home, trips around town, dogs, work gear—you start using it for all the things you might otherwise grab the car for.

Which also means you really, really don't want it disappearing.

Bike theft has long been one of the less-fun realities of owning a bike, and e-bikes and cargo bikes can be especially tempting targets because of their value. But an interesting shift is happening as e-bikes get smarter, the technology built into them is beginning to make them much harder to steal—and much easier to recover.

Your Bike Can Now Tell You When Something's Up

Christiania Bikes has partnered with Comodule, a leader in connected e-bike technology, to add a digital layer of security to its electric cargo bikes.

Through the Christiania Bikes app, a connected bike can offer features including:

• GPS tracking so you can see your bike's location

• Movement notifications if your locked bike is moved

• An audible alarm on compatible systems

• Motor immobilization on compatible Shimano systems

• A digital ID connected to the bike's unique frame number

So instead of walking outside and discovering your bike is gone, your bike can potentially tell you that someone is messing with it while it's happening.

And that appears to make a real difference.

Comodule recently reported that 90% of Christiania e-bike owners who received a movement alert while their bike was locked were able to either prevent the theft or recover their bike afterward.

That's a pretty compelling little notification.

Locks Still Matter

We haven't reached the point where you can toss your bike lock into the recycling bin.

Christiania still recommends using a good permanent lock, adding a strong chain lock, and securing your cargo bike to something that can't be moved. Keeping your receipt and a record or photo of your frame number is also important.

Think of digital security as another layer.

A physical lock makes the bike harder to take. Connected technology can let you know someone is trying, help disable the electric system, and—if the bike does disappear—give you a way to locate it.

That's a much better combination than simply hoping your lock was intimidating enough.

GPS That's Actually Built for a Bike

There's also an important difference between an integrated e-bike tracker and simply hiding a Bluetooth tracker somewhere on your bike.

Christiania's Comodule system uses satellite positioning together with cellular networks, allowing the bike's location to be tracked beyond the short-range network used by a typical Bluetooth tracker. The system is integrated discreetly into the bike and powered by the e-bike's electrical system, with its own backup battery if the main battery is removed.

That means the security system was designed as part of the bike—not added as an afterthought.

There's One Catch: You Have to Turn It On

Here's perhaps the most interesting part of the story.

According to Comodule, only about 35% of Christiania e-cargo bikes currently on the road have the connected security hardware, and of the owners whose bikes have connectivity, roughly 65% haven't paired their bike with the app.

In other words, some Christiania owners may already have a powerful anti-theft tool on their bike and simply aren't using it.
