Biking to Wilder Ranch

Our go-to ride for ocean views, picnic breaks, and a little local history

Just north of Santa Cruz, Wilder Ranch State Park is one of those awesome places where it’s just as much about the ride there as the destination itself. We bike out often — for holidays, for lazy Sunday afternoons, or just when the fog lifts and we need some space and fresh air.  It was a go to during Covid.

The trail from town to Wilder has views out to the ocean and sometimes you pass a horse or two. Once you get there, the park opens up into blufftop trails, coastal terraces, and historic ranch buildings that were once part of a working dairy farm.

Wilder spans about 7,000 acres with 34 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. There’s no camping, but the day-use area is perfect for a few hours of exploring.

The visitor center and historic buildings give a glimpse into the area’s past — especially meaningful for our family since both my mom and now Eloise are docents at the park.
