From Garden Waste to Zero-Waste: How the Royal Horticultural Society Is Going Green with Christiania Bikes

How’s this for bloomin’ brilliant?

The Royal Horticultural Society (yes, that RHS) has officially swapped out their diesel-guzzling garden vehicles for a fleet of Christiania Bikes—18 electric cargo bikes now zipping quietly (and cleanly) through five of their iconic UK gardens.

Out with the fumes, in with the flower power.

These specially adapted Christiania bikes are built to handle the heavy lifting—literally. With roomy front boxes capable of hauling tools, compost, and up to 100kg of garden waste, they’ve proven that sustainable transport can also be seriously practical. No idling engines. No fossil fuels. Just smooth pedaling through the roses.

According to RHS Head of Sustainability Malcolm Anderson, there was some healthy skepticism at first. But now? Staff are basically racing each other to claim their bike every morning. (A garden Grand Prix, if you will.)

This is exactly the kind of real-world, real-fun, real-sustainable story we love to see. Christiania bikes aren’t just for family adventures or market hauls—they’re workhorses too. Whether you’re delivering flowers in Michigan or pruning perennials in the UK, it’s clear: pedal power is planting roots.
